Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Arts Department of Library Science arranges some social service activities by improving a secondary school, Nong-Saeng Witayakom, in Saraburi Province every year. I am, as a cataloging instructor, responsible for training our Information Studies students to organize information resources in its library. A librarian-teacher previously chose "PLS 3.0 software" for recording all bibliographic data into the library database. Such software seems irrelevant to the current learning environment where students or library users prefer searching information via web interfaces to retrieving book data on dark screen of computers. For this reason, I decide to change the school library's existing database from PLS 3.0 to "OBEC Library Automation System." The latter was cooperatively developed by Office of the Basic Education Commission and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. The OBEC system was made on the basis of "OpenBiblio" that is one of popular open-sources for small and medium libraries. Video clips showing how to install the OBEC software and other useful files are provided below. They are directly derived from their own websites or primary sources. Please note that I intend to publicize these materials just for educational purposes only. 1) Setting up the OBEC Library Automation System

![]() To my students attending my Information Resource Organization class, here are two key tools that help you select and purchase reading media effectively for our social service activity on 14th December 2013. You have to choose four books or other study materials suitable for Matthayom 1-6 students at Nongsaeng Wiitayakom, Saraburi Province. To accomplish this activity, you need to familiarise yourself with the school library standard and guidelines on pupils' reading development issued by Bureau of Academic Affairs and Educational Standards. The first title provides the performance measures and internal audit criteria for annually evaluating operations of Thai school libraries and improving their information resource and service delivery. You should especially focus on Section 4 of this library standard that explains three specifications in connection with printed materials, audio-visual media, and use of information technology for managing information resources in the libraries. These details can give you general, but mandatory frameworks for acquisition as well as organization of library collections that are required by the executives and policy makers from Ministry of Education. . For the guidelines on pupils' reading habits development, this tool particularly offers practical suggestions about encouraging learners to enjoy reading and developing school libraries. It applies the Cabinet's national agenda for reading promotion to practices by officially launching the scheme '3Gs library' -- Good books and study materials, Good learning environments, and Good librarians and activities -- all over the school libraries. If you do not have enough time to skim it through the guidelines, just read Page 92-99 which explain book selection criterion, types of information resources the libraries should acquire, sources useful for book purchase consideration, and collection management procedures. Both ordinances mentioned above enable you to choose books efficiently when we start undertaking our voluntary work for Department of Library Science in December. Cheerio! As I was invited to join two seminars on "Thai school libraries and ASEAN" in Roi-Et and Buriram Province, this PowerPoint presentation, therefore, was created to serve as the handouts of both academic events that will occur on 28th and 30th of May 2013 respectively.
